UK waters are very diverse from both species and habitat perspectives. They provide a wide range of ecosystem services for society that go beyond purely financial returns – they are also part of the natural heritage of the UK and contribute to our cultural heritage and traditions. The ability of the sea to continue to provide these services depends not only upon the diversity of species and habitats but also on the way they interact to provide complex and integrated ecosystems that underpin the balance of the marine environment. However, the integrity of the marine ecosystem and its functions is under threat from a range of sources, both immediate (including fisheries, pollution and offshore developments) and long-term (including climate change and ocean acidification).

In July 2008 IMM Ltd was contracted by the Tubney Charitable Trust (TCT) to carry out a review of current and impending threats to the marine environment in UK waters to inform recommendations regarding: actions that are required to safeguard and conserve it; a needs analysis of what Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) should be doing, individually and collectively; a review of the current capacity of NGOs to meet these needs; and recommendations for how any gaps in the system may be filled.

The review was funded by the Tubney Charitable Trust and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation (EFF). The review was made up of two key components:

1) A literature review to provide an overview of the status and threats to UK Marine Biodiversity; and

2) A consultation process with sixty seven key informants representing governmental and non-governmental groups involved in marine biodiversity conservation across the
UK.

The consultation process provided a validation of the literature review and guidance on the actions that are required to improve the effectiveness of NGOs in their work to conserve UK marine biodiversity.

The review was completed in January 2009 and the results have gone onto influence the marine funding programmes of the TCT and EFF.
