The Social Development Department (now Economic and Social Department) of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN undertook a series of studies worldwide from 1998 - 2000 to develop a better understanding of the ways in which local institutions, and changes in those institutions, can influence the people's livelihoods, particularly in rural areas.
In 2000, IMM was asked to use the findings from these studies to develop a set of guidelines for development practitioners on understanding the linkages between livelihoods and local institutions.
